INFERTILITY IN AYURVEDA – वन्ध्यत्व – VYANDHYATVA

In Ayurveda, infertility is understood as the inability to conceive despite regular, unprotected intercourse, and is referred to as “Vandhyatva.” It is viewed as an imbalance in the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), improper functioning of the shukra dhatu (reproductive tissue), and weakened agni (digestive fire). Infertility may also arise from chronic stress, poor lifestyle, toxin accumulation (ama), or disturbances in the menstrual cycle and ovulation in women, and poor sperm quality in men. Again, Ayurveda infertility treatments are dwelt in two different approaches as Rasayana Chikitsa and Vajikarna Chikitsa

Ayurveda emphasizes holistic management through panchakarma detox therapies, other herbal formulations like Ashwagandha, Shatavari, or Gokshura, and dietary and lifestyle modifications to restore balance, nourish the reproductive tissues, and improve fertility naturally.

In Ayurveda, under the subcontext of Vyandhytva, the causes of male and Female infertility are discussed separately and in detail. Treatment of Rasayana and Vajikarna is also given in full detail for such disorders. It also deals with PCOD and PCOS-related medical conditions nowadays predominant in the female body separately in the chapter of Granthi vikara.
